BNY/Mellon Request for Tax ID Number

We have set up this page to facilitate getting the shareholder's tax ID number on record with the company's transfer agent (Mellon).  Some of you get a form from BNY/Mellon requesting a Tax ID number (SSNO).  Unfortunately BNY/Mellon is known for making things difficult.  The form tells you to either go to their website or call a number to provide the information.

If you go to the website, you need an Investor ID to log on.  Guess what? You can't get an Investor ID number from them until the shareholder's SSNO is on file - catch 22.

At this point you can do one of the following:

  • Call BNY/Mellon - You can call the phone number on the form (bny/mellon contact info)  and ask them to send you a  W-9 (W-8 for foreign shareholders) to fill out with your SSNO and return to them.  Keep in mind that when you call, their normal process is to look you up in their system by your SSNO.  Again, you do not have a SSNO on file yet so they have to look you up by the name and address on the certificate.  Once you receive the form, fill it out and return it to them.
  • Print & Send W-9 - You can simply print, fill out and send in the W-9 ( W-8 for foreign shareholders). Get the forms here. Then send it to the address on their contact us page.
